Launching a Bitcoin Treasure Hunt on the Moon

We are partnering with LunarCrush, Lunar Outpost, and Golden Wolf to bring a Bitcoin treasure hunt to the moon. A private key for a Bitcoin wallet will be affixed to a lunar rover, and the key can only be retrieved via space travel. Happy hunting, astronauts!

LunarCrush is sending a treasure chest of Bitcoin, NFTs, and other cryptoassets to the Earth’s moon, and the bounty, dubbed Nakamoto_1, will be unlocked by the first space traveler to reach it. The wallet’s private key will be etched onto a Lunar Outpost MAPP Rover launching into space later this year.

At Hiro, we provided technical support for the creation of Bitcoin-backed NFTs that will fund the treasure chest and help spark more excitement around this interplanetary treasure hunt.

The process of engraving the private key affixed to the rover will be fully documented to offer transparency that no one, including us or our partners, has access to the private keys. Once the rover lands on the moon, anyone on Earth can create a plan to reach it and unlock the bounty of digital gold. The rover will be taken to the moon in Q4 of this year via a SpaceX rocket.

“We’re excited to inspire a new generation of space explorers as they make that next small step for the world,” said Alex Miller, CEO of Hiro.

To fund the treasure chest, LunarCrush will sell a special collection of Bitcoin-secured NFTs starting March 28th at lunarcrush.com/nakamoto1. The NFTs will be priced at $250 USD, and the proceeds will go to:

  • 25% of sales of the NFTs will go towards funding the treasure chest
  • 25% of sales will go to a “Community Marketing Wallet,” which will fund Bitcoin core development and STEM education related causes.
  • 50% of sales will go towards operational costs—putting something on the moon ain’t cheap!

Secondary NFT sales on the Gamma.io marketplace, along with any contributions to the public wallet, will further increase the value of the treasure chest sent to the Moon, and the contributing teams will inscribe some of the NFT concept art as Ordinals and will include them in the treasure chest.

Animation studio Golden Wolf and Hiro partnered with LunarCrush and Lunar Outpost to make Nakamoto_1 come to life. Golden Wolf created the art, and we provided technical support for the creation of the Bitcoin-backed NFTs that will fund the treasure chest.
